Guest count is the starting point
The right amount of face painting time depends on how many children want a design, the detail of the designs, and how many artists are working. Give the entertainer your expected headcount and age range rather than choosing a duration on its own.
Not every guest will participate, but it is sensible to plan for the people who might want to. At a school or community event, attendance can be less predictable than at a birthday party. Discuss that uncertainty when requesting a quote.
Simple designs and detailed designs take different amounts of time
A small cheek design generally needs less time than a detailed full-face design. A limited menu can make decisions easier and keep a busy line moving. For a smaller party, guests may have more flexibility to choose individual designs.
Ask the artist for an estimate based on your chosen style. Treat that estimate as a planning guide, not a guarantee: a child may need a break, change their choice, or decide to watch first.
Think about setup and the queue
Ask what table, chairs, shade, lighting, and water access are needed. Keep the painting area away from food preparation and leave enough room for guests to pass safely. Confirm whether setup is included in the scheduled time.
At a larger event, have a host manage the queue and explain when the line will close. A numbered list or another nearby activity can let children enjoy the party while they wait. Do not promise late arrivals a turn after the booking has ended.
Share sensitivities before the party
Tell the artist about known allergies or skin sensitivities in advance. Ask about products and available alternatives. A patch test does not guarantee that a reaction will not occur. Painting should always be optional, and guests with irritated or broken skin should discuss alternatives with the artist.
When is a second artist worth considering?
Consider another artist when the guest count is large, the schedule is short, or you want detailed designs without a long queue. Ask for a comparison between a longer booking, simpler designs, and an additional artist. That makes the tradeoff clear before you decide.
